The Body Scanner is part of the roll out by the Federal Government at the eight Australian international gateway airports to provide an additional layer of security screening to assist in detecting prohibited items. They are not an x-ray system, rather the body scanner uses millimetre wave technology which penetrates clothing but not the skin, identifying items in clothing or on the body. They are safe, with one scan emitting 10,000 times less radio frequency energy than an average mobile phone call. Privacy is protected as the scanner displays only a generic stick or “gingerbread man” figure and scans are not stored or transmitted.
